New Sustainable Circular System for reducing food loss via Fruit Gleaning and Upcycling

Objective

LIFE GLEANSMART will reshape the paradigm of fruit losses through a proven methodology to strategically plan new harvesting and gleaning procedures in order to improve farmers’ competitiveness and reduce food losses through recycling, introducing unharvested fruit into a new circular value chain.

Activities

Develop a new circular value chain based on the accurate quantification of food losses to plan the recovery of at least 25% of current fruit losses at the primary stage and their transformation into 6 value-added recycled powdered food ingredients validated in 3 food products.
Validate a methodology for the upcycling of food losses based on data-driven decisions, an innovative autonomous robotic system (up to TRL-7) and a digital support platform to help farmers develop harvesting strategies and reduce fruit losses.
