Atomisation technologies: spray drying and spray chilling
Atomisation technologies enable the conversion of liquids, emulsions or suspensions into powders by atomising the product into an օդ airflow. In the case of spray drying, an ultra-fast evaporation of the solvent takes place, generating solid particles with controlled morphology, high stability and excellent flowability. In the case of spray chilling, molten lipophilic materials (structured oils, waxes, fats) are used, without solvents.
What market challenges does it address?
- Instability of ingredients sensitive to light, oxygen, temperature and humidity
- Difficulty incorporating liquid actives into solid formulations (food, cosmetics, pharma)
- Handling, dosing and transport issues for liquids or pastes
- Need to extend shelf life by reducing water activity
- Need to mask aromas/flavours, protect microorganisms or encapsulate functional actives
- Production of ingredients with controlled or delayed release
-
Volume reduction by removing water for transport
- Stabilisation of microorganisms
