Active and smart packaging for food
The deterioration of marketed products can lead, depending on the stage of the chain where it occurs, to major economic losses, reduced credibility in distribution and decreased consumer trust. This results in damage to the company’s brand image.
- Ensuring product safety and meeting the quality requirements expected by consumers is key to avoiding alerts and continuing to maintain consumer trust. In this regard, having the right packaging is essential.
- Verification, in the early stages of product or process development, of the stability of the product under study against specific risk microorganisms, both in terms of food safety and commercial quality.
At AINIA, we add value
- We improve Food Safety.
- We guarantee the quality of packaged products.
- We reduce food waste and the associated economic costs.
- We help improve consumer trust.
Active food packaging: How do we work?
We design active packaging that helps extend shelf life, maintaining or improving the condition of the packaged food. These designs are based on the incorporation of components that can be released in a controlled manner onto a food product or into the packaging environment, or that are designed to absorb substances from that environment.
Based on the type of product and the format in which it is marketed, fresh, pre-cooked, etc., the functionalities that the packaging must provide will be defined.
There are oxygen- and moisture-absorbing packaging solutions that can, among other functions, retain exudates from packaged products. There are also packaging solutions incorporating antimicrobial substances to prevent the proliferation of pathogenic or spoilage microorganisms. In addition, some packaging incorporates antioxidants to prevent deterioration.
In all these cases, it is necessary to verify the strict European legislation relating to authorised active materials.
The active substance can be incorporated by directly introducing the active element in a sachet, pouch or label together with the product; or into the packaging material, with controlled release inside the package.
