Active packaging design

Active and smart packaging for food

The deterioration of marketed products can lead, depending on the stage of the chain where it occurs, to major economic losses, reduced credibility in distribution and decreased consumer trust. This results in damage to the company’s brand image.

Active food packaging: How do we work?

We design active packaging that helps extend shelf life, maintaining or improving the condition of the packaged food. These designs are based on the incorporation of components that can be released in a controlled manner onto a food product or into the packaging environment, or that are designed to absorb substances from that environment.

Based on the type of product and the format in which it is marketed, fresh, pre-cooked, etc., the functionalities that the packaging must provide will be defined.

There are oxygen- and moisture-absorbing packaging solutions that can, among other functions, retain exudates from packaged products. There are also packaging solutions incorporating antimicrobial substances to prevent the proliferation of pathogenic or spoilage microorganisms. In addition, some packaging incorporates antioxidants to prevent deterioration.

In all these cases, it is necessary to verify the strict European legislation relating to authorised active materials.

The active substance can be incorporated by directly introducing the active element in a sachet, pouch or label together with the product; or into the packaging material, with controlled release inside the package.
