BIOPROSPECT

New tools and biological resources for applications in food and health
1 July, 2024

Objective

The BIOSPROSPECT project aims to develop a high-throughput screening platform to characterise new biological resources obtained from anthropic and/or extreme environments. In order to create a database of fully characterised microorganisms of interest to the food, biotechnology and pharmaceutical sectors, the following specific objectives will be pursued:

  1. Monitored high-throughput screening platform: a platform will be developed to monitor the evolution of biological processes inside bioreactors. This platform will facilitate the screening of the strains under study.
  2. Expansion of the CRBG biological resources collection: strains from anthropic and extreme environments will be isolated and registered in the CRBG.
  3. Assessment of the potential of CRBG microorganisms: the fermentative and probiotic potential of selected CRBG strains will be determined.
  4. Characterisation of CRBG microorganisms: the metabolomic profile will be analysed and the complete genome of the selected CRBG strains will be sequenced in order to obtain a full characterisation.
  5. Determination of the capacity to produce enzymes of industrial interest: the bacterial capacity to produce enzymes of industrial interest, mainly biotechnological, derived from CRBG strains will be assessed.
  6. Evaluation of functionality in the digestive tract: an in vitro evaluation will be carried out on the strains with the greatest probiotic potential.

Activities

  1. Isolation of new strains from anthropic environments.
  2. Assessment of the potential of CRBG microorganisms and isolated microorganisms.
  3. Evaluation of functionality in the digestive tract of the strains with the greatest potential, using in vitro digestion systems and cell models.
  4. Development of a high-throughput monitoring platform to facilitate the screening of microbial strains.
  5. Technology transfer
  6. Dissemination and communication.
  7. Management and coordination.
