New European policies related to the creation of a circular economy address the use of more sustainable packaging materials. The European 2030 strategy reflects the objectives for materials to be recycled and recyclable. Consumers have also embraced this trend and are looking for more environmentally friendly packaging alternatives.
In the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, the incorporation of more sustainable packaging materials is linked to the need for them to remain safe, maintain product shelf life and continue to meet functional requirements, including logistics and consumer use.
At AINIA, we add value
- We develop materials from industrial by-products, such as stones, cereal residues, juice residues, cheese by-products, etc.
- We modify materials, obtaining new characteristics that provide them with greater economic value.
- We package the products and assess their shelf life, adjusting the properties of the materials. We study the environmental impacts generated, LCA, and the technical-economic feasibility of their implementation.
- We assess the recyclability and compostability of materials and packaging.
More sustainable packaging and packaging materials
We develop new packaging materials taking into account sustainability, food safety and economic viability. We work on the development of new plastic and cellulosic materials generated from natural sources and designed to be easily recyclable.
Through advanced processes, we are able to transform organic waste from the agri-food industry into biopolymers for use in packaging and other products. We have also made progress in the recovery of other waste, such as cellulose, to generate materials that can form part of more sustainable packaging.
The validation of these materials involves shelf-life studies, understanding consumer opinion, legal aspects, ensuring material safety and studying their technical-economic viability.
