Verification of nutritional value and labelling

Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers introduced mandatory nutritional labelling for most processed foods. The components that must be declared are: energy value, fat, saturated fat, carbohydrates, sugars, protein and salt. This mandatory nutritional information may be voluntarily supplemented with values for other nutrients such as mono- and polyunsaturated fatty acids, polyols, starch, dietary fibre, vitamins or minerals.

Information on the nutritional characteristics of a food is currently an essential element in consumers’ purchasing decisions, as it allows them—particularly those with specific dietary needs—to choose the product that best meets their requirements.

For this reason, food manufacturers and distributors must verify the product’s commercial and nutritional quality parameters before placing it on the market.
